Energy Data and Intelligence System for Off-Grid Networks (EDISON)

As part of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), FI developed a system to monitor, verify, and analyze data for the Power Africa: Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia (BGFZ) program.

Client: REEEP, Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia

Challenge: REEEP is an international multilateral partnership that works to accelerate market-based deployment of renewable energy and energy efficient systems in developing countries. REEEP manages, on behalf of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and Swedish Embassy to Zambia in Lusaka, the Power Africa: Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia (BGFZ).

REEEP was tasked with the procurement of Energy service provider (ESP) and deployment of renewable products to 1 Million end users within four years in Zambia. The FI team was asked to develop API’s that automatically collected data in a consolidated way from the four Energy Service Providers (ESPs) and stored in a secure and manageable way.

FI Solution: FI built APIs to capture data from ESPs, have a central database to store data and provide visualization in a web-based application (EDISON). FI used open source technologies such as JAVA for API, MySQL Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) to store data, Java Spring middleware to transfer data from API posts to the RDBMS, and Angular for user interface. A dashboard was created for displaying BGFZ promotions, dynamically monitoring Energy Service Subscription (ESS) validation (verifying the deployment of ESS) and risk monitoring.

FI Impact: EDISON provides real-time monitoring and verification is made available to Fund Managers to track and monitor the deployment of services funded by the BGFZ and to identify anomalous data (errors, fraud, etc.). Risk monitoring and business model learning (displayed on a BGFZ internal dashboard) data is analyzed in real time and at quarterly and annual reporting periods. By reviewing in defined periods, we are able to identify and assess business model risks that could jeopardize the ability of one or more ESPs to deliver contractually committed ESS under the BGFZ. Data is stored and utilized for data modelling, analysis and learning. These analyses focus on specific aspects of (1) overall Fund performance (2) the performance of individual ESPs and business models (3) the behavior of customer segments (4) trends and linkages between customer behavior, business performance and other data points (e.g. demographic data, climate and weather data, development data, etc.). Finally, EDISON provides for BGFZ promotion using a public-facing external dashboard accessible via URL and linked to the BGFZ home page demonstrating the impact of the BGFZ to the public. BGFZ won the 2019 UN Climate change award as well as the Ashden award and FI Consulting is proud to support REEEP’s efforts.
